FAQS & Vintage Guide

Please read before purchasing vintage garments and accessories from C. Madeleine's.

Vintage: Classically well-made, embodying the high style of a past era, representative of the best.  Vintage clothing has been pre-owned or previously worn, and may have typical vintage characteristics from care, time and being worn. Look for items classified as Mint Condition if looking for a near perfect piece. Most of our pieces are classified as Near Mint Condition, see C. Madeleine's item condition classifications.

Vintage garment sizes from past decades are not the same as modern sizing. The measurements posted for each product are the dimensions of the garment, not your measurements. We try to measure as accurately as possible. For the best fit, you will need to take your measurements and account for comfort and ease of movement. We measure precisely, not approximately, so keep that in mind when measuring yourself. For example, if the waist size says 26" you will need to be a little smaller to fit. How much depends on you and your idea of comfort.
We usually take measurements while the item is hanging, in an unstretched state.

When measuring for fit, it is important follow these instructions to ensure your measurements will work with the garment's measurements before purchasing:

Position measuring tape so that it covers the widest part of your back and the fullest part of your bust, not under the bust but the fullest part of the bust. Make sure you do not pull the tape tight.

Place tape around your natural waist, the bend on your side is your natural waist. Make sure you do not pull the tape tight.

Position the measuring tape at the widest part of your hip which should be a few inches above the crotch area. Make sure you do not pull the tape tight.

The inseam is measured from the highest point inside the leg (crotch) to the hem or ankle. Position the measuring tape at the highest point on the inside of the leg and measure to your ankle or pant hem.

We encourage questions about the garment, fabric, condition, size and proper measuring technique, so please contact us prior to purchase for a prompt response from customer service, usually within 48 hours. Most of the items available at C. Madeleine's have been previously owned and might have slight imperfections. Our staff examines thousands of pieces each month and selects only the best for your consideration. Occassionally, the finest representation of a piece may have flaws. It is almost impossible to find an older garment without a flaw. We will point out anything which affects the wearability or value of the item. Remember, these product listings are of vintage pieces that could be decades old. A small blemish can enhance the charm and authenticity if the piece. Wearing vintage is a matter of taste. Some shoppers might be better suited buying new. However, if you desire quality and want to develop your own fashion personality, then you will overlook a small imperfection to value the timeless sophistication of vintage pieces.

We professionally clean and repair all items as much as possible so we rarely accept or sell anything in less than Excellent Condition, unless it is an extra special piece, a collector's item, or an exception due to its age or era. Any major flaws are mentioned in the item's description.

Once in a while we may miss small flaws such as minor loose seams, tiny holes or faint stains. Small flaws that are not visible or do not affect the wearing of the item are not mentioned.

Please keep in mind that most of our items are from decades past and will have typical vintage wear from cleaning, age, etc. unless it's listed as Mint Condition. We want you to be happy with your C. Madeleine's Vintage purchase, so please contact us for information regarding an item's condition.

  1. MINT: No visible imperfections or flaws whatsoever. Sometimes, unworn with tags.
  2. EXCELLENT: A few minor imperfections. One, perhaps two teeny issues. A barely-there spot or a slightly frayed cuff, for example.
  3. GOOD: Has been well-loved and worn, showing its vintage age a bit, but still has a lot of life and years of wear in it.
